About the event

If you support in practical lessons or STEM clubs, deliver demonstrations, work with SEND students and deal with behaviour inside and outside the classroom then this course can help you feel more confident and able in your role. This one day course will explore ideas for effective behaviour management, best practice in practical work, questioning strategies, how to perform effective demonstrations, group work and working well with teachers and all students. All tailored to technicians who want to or already are working with students more directly.

It is essential to have good audio by way of a speaker and a microphone during the day, to enhance participation when engaging with other technicians.

Programme

9.00-10.30 Behaviour management and questioning students

This session will cover simple behaviour for learning strategies for technicians to feel more confident in dealing with behaviour situations. Questioning, feedback and communicating with students are a really important part of successfully engaging with them, we will explore good practice techniques to enable technicians to interact more fully with students.

11.00-12.30 Effective demonstrations and presentations

Technicians often demonstrate and present to students in this session we will look at best practice and how to make demonstrations and presentations more effective. We will look at some example demonstrations, how to add value to them and what an effective demo or presentation would look like.

13.30-15.00 Supporting in practical lesson and group activities

This session will cover some clear guidance for technicians when working in the lab with students (and teachers), what good practical work should look like and how to engage small groups of students.

Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

· Work more effectively to support students in the classroom

· Feel confident in the delivering content and demonstrations

· Use and evaluate strategies for behaviour and questioning

· Explore ways to make practical work more effective

The course will be delivered using Zoom sessions, which will be held on the same day and will include group work/discussion and power-point slides. Participants will need access to a PC, or laptop or tablet / ipad type device with audio.
