Primary Science in a Nutshell front cover

ASE are excited to announce that Primary Science in a Nutshell, a new book title from ASE, written by Leigh Hoath and Ben Rogers, is due for publication this autumn.

What’s it about and who should read it?

Are you a primary teacher who feels uncertain about teaching science? You're not alone!  Many educators face the same challenge and "Primary Science in a Nutshell" is here to help. This essential guide addresses the confidence gap in teaching science, offering practical support without overwhelming you with information.

Inside this book, you will find:

  • Big Ideas Explained: Clear overviews of key concepts from the English National Curriculum (and beyond).
  • Key Knowledge: Detailed explanations to ensure you understand the subject matter deeply, extending beyond curriculum statements.
  • Misconceptions Unveiled: Common student misunderstandings and effective strategies to correct them.
  • Planning support: Essential questions to ask, a progression grid to track learning from Early Years to Key Stage 3, and tips for connecting prior knowledge.
  • Practical Use: Designed for easy, quick reference during lesson planning and teaching.

What do the authors say about it?

'There's a lot to know about science in the primary curriculum and we wanted to create a resource to help build the confidence of teachers when in the classroom with their pupils. This is a starting point for doing that and we are so excited by Science in a Nutshell, not least because of the fabulous contributors who have helped make it happen!'

How much will it cost?

£26.99 and (£16.99 for ASE members).

I’m interested – when will it be available?

The title is due for publication later this autumn. If you’d like to be notified when the book has been printed and available for purchase through our bookshop, please use our expression of interest form to send us your details.
