RISE - Analysing your survey data - Step 4

Introduction

Emotional needs and job satisfaction are variable and subjective. It is important to consider the context at the time the survey was taken. What, if anything, has recently or is currently undergoing change in the:

  • science department?
  • whole school?
  • local community?
  • national community?

You may also need to consider if there are any staff who have had or are experiencing change in their lives that may impact their emotional needs (wellbeing, job satisfaction and career intentions). Consider the following potential change contexts, coupled with examples of potential impact factors - are these changes likely to have a positive or negative impact on most staff in the short, medium and/or long term?

  • Individual level: New to the department/school, new to teaching year groups / topics / subjects, returning from long term illness, maternity, career break, change in personal life (marriage, birth, divorce, relationship breakdown, illness or death of close friend or family member).

  • Department level: Change of leadership, significant change in staffing, staff numbers at capacity, significant staff absence, change in teaching rooms/spaces e.g. new labs or loss of space due to unexpected damage, a time of short-term increased workload, time of term.

  • School level: Change of leadership, significant change in staffing, new departmental line manager, new school policies, new accountability or performance measures, particularly successful or unsuccessful results, perception of the department in the school.

  • Local level: Perceptions of the school by the local community, positive or negative events within the local community, local roadworks / travel disruption making getting to work difficult, extreme weather events e.g. flooding, snow.

  • National level: Pandemic, change of curriculum, significant policy change announcements and implementation e.g. examination arrangements, national events e.g. sports events, public figure birth, marriage or death,
