In this activity children will develop literacy, numeracy and science skills through activities based on these three health news stories.
Description
There are three health news stories - Brits' Over-indulgence in Sugar, How the explosion of E-mail and Mobiles curtails Exercise and The Potential Heart Problems of Ageing Rock Stars.
Does the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs endanger their health?
Children will develop literacy, numeracy and science skills through activities based on these stories.
Learning Objective:
- That to stay healthy we need an adequate and varied diet
- That we need exercise to stay healthy and to maintain our muscles
- That when we exercise, our muscles work harder
- To make predictions
- That substances like tobacco, alcohol and other drugs can affect the way the body functions and these effects can be harmful
Children will learn:
- To identify foods which contain large amounts of sugars e.g. sweets and jam
- To use simple texts to find information and select information from sources provided for them
- To annotate the picture with appropriate information about the effects of drugs, tobacco and alcohol.
- To write a commentary on an issue on paper or screen (e.g. as a news editorial, leaflet)
- To use structures from reading to set out and link points, e.g. numbered lists, bullet points.
- To construct an argument in note form or full text to persuade others of a point of view.
- Present the case to the class or a group
- Evaluate its effectiveness
- To solve 'story' problems about numbers in real life, choosing the appropriate operation and method of calculation.
These resources were initially developed in partnership with the Centre for Science Education, Sheffield Hallam University.
