In this activity children learn about friction and investigate the grip of different shoes to decide which are appropriate for racing on sports day.

Children will learn about friction, defined in the simplest terms. Children will then apply this knowledge to investigate the grip of different shoes and decide which is the most appropriate footwear for running a race on sports day.
Learning Objective:

Children will learn:
- that friction can be useful in everyday life
- to identify which type of sole has the best grip on different surfaces
These resources were initially developed in partnership with the Centre for Science Education, Sheffield Hallam University.
