In a generation of perpetual connectivity to our mobile devices and the constantly changing face of technology, it seems absurd that we should be suffering a lack of skilled scientists and engineers. In an interview with the BBC in 2013, Professor John Perkins, chief scientific adviser at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, said that this could be constraining the UK's economic recovery.
