Learn how to set up a hydrogen fuel cell by extending an activity most schools already do – the electrolysis of ‘water’.

GCSE students in most schools carry out the electrolysis of various solutions and in some they reverse the reaction to generate an electric current by combining electrodes of two different metals. Given the present interest in fuel cells, however, it is surprising that more schools don’t realise how straightforward it is to set up a hydrogen fuel cell by extending an activity most schools already do – the electrolysis of ‘water’.
